Residents will have noticed the disruption to the car park and roads around Queensmead as work begins on the development on the site - a development which is costing £20 million and will not amount to the promised Leisure Centre for Farnborough.
Rushmoor Conservatives secured the £20 million from the last Conservative Government with the help of Leo Docherty MP and had a fully prepared plan for a proper Leisure Centre including sports halls and courts ready to go to planning committee.
Despite promising repeatedly to deliver the plan which would have regenerated Farnborough town centre and significantly raised the value of Council owned sites in the area, Labour abandoned the plan.
Having stalled for two years and refused to engage with local residents they are now progressing with a much smaller plan which does not include sports halls or many of the other popular facilities you would expect in a leisure centre and which were promised - prioritising yet another gym instead!
The plan will also permanently take out the most popular car park in Farnborough town centre - damaging local shops, putting some out of business and making the town centre even more inaccessible.
This is a massive waste of money and a wasted opportunity to improve our town centre.
Meanwhile the old Leisure Centre site now looks set to become yet more low quality shoebox flats to meet the Labour Government's housing targets.
Rushmoor needs more good family homes, not more tiny low quality flats.
Once again our Labour council are refusing to listen, wasting our money and damaging our town.
Farnborough deserves better!
